Twenty-five years ago, the idea arose in Rotterdam to set up a City Collection that would be housed at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. This initiative – together with a number of other measures and facilities – resulted from the desire to give Rotterdam art policy a boost. The City Collection now consists of approximately 800 works by talents from the city. Now that the City Collection has existed for twenty-five years, it is time to look back as well as forward. What has been collected, which projects and publications have been realized and what will the collection look like in the future? This publication in honor of the 25th anniversary of the City Collection brings the history of this sub-collection to life through essays by current and former City curators, a file catalog and more than a hundred works of art that are highlighted in words and images.
