Seeing the light
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen's 78th weekly program focuses on light, in all its manifestations: warm, cold, bright, dim, romantic, artificial, or celestial. From Johan Barthold Jongkind's sunrise at Overschie to Laurens van Kuik's radiant lighthouse, a still life with lamp by Picasso, and Pipilotti Rist's artwork, which she used outside the Depot to create colorful pools of light to immerse you in. And of course, attention is given to the light sources themselves: from a medieval candlestick to the lantern lamp by Studio Wieki Somers. While exploring the collection, another realization emerged: shadow plays an indispensable role in almost every artwork. Without darkness, there is no light. The 54 selected artworks from the collection are explained with texts by Esmee Postma.
