After Jacques Schoufour received a statue of Saint Martin as a gift from his wife Ingeborg Martin in 1977, the couple developed a deep love for sculpture. In the decades that followed, they passionately put together a collection of sculpture. The emphasis was on late medieval wooden statues from the Netherlands, which still retained their original painting or polychromy. But when a statue with a German or French origin, an enamel from Limoges or a rare ivory diptych caught their eye, it was included in the collection with just as much care. The Rotterdam portman Schoufour decided to leave the collection to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen during his lifetime. In honor of this grand gift, which in 2014 doubled the museum's collection of medieval sculpture, all statues, enamels and ivories from the Schoufour-Martin collection have been extensively researched and described.
