J.C. Ebbinge Wubben became the director of Museum Boymans, as it was then called, in May 1945, shortly after the liberation of the Netherlands. He was meant to hold that post temporarily, but things turned out differently. It was only on 31 March 1978 that he resigned the director's post. Ebbinge Wubben had sky-high ambitions from the start. His aim was to put Rotterdam on the cultural map, both nationally and internationally, with rapidly changing top exhibitions and a high-level permanent collection of ancient and modern art. He also wanted to make the museum more accessible to the public, and create more exhibition space by building a new wing. This Boijmans Study examines Ebbinge Wubben's ambitious policy. Did the museum director's mission succeed?
