In 1962 Hans Sonnenberg opened the Delta Gallery in the basement of the Rotterdamsche Kunstkring. In everyday life he was a ship broker in Rotterdam and a passionate lover and collector of contemporary art. Time after time he presented important national and international trends in the Delta Gallery, one of the first galleries for contemporary art in the Netherlands. Fifty years on Delta is still there, run by the same man.
In 2000 Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen was given the opportunity to make a selection from Sonnenberg’s private collection for the museum’s collection. The museum chose works by artists who included Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Hockney and Piero Manzoni. This Boijmans Study examines these works and the role and meaning of a unique Rotterdam gallery and gallery owner, who has become known as ‘Mr Delta’.
