Description

“I was looking for something round,” says Winy Maas, the frontman of MVRDV, about the origins of Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen. This open archive for the city's art museum now stands like a colossal mirror bowl in Rotterdam's Museum Park and reflects the surroundings in a surreal panorama. “The interns had placed a large rectangular block of Styrofoam on the construction model,” Maas remembers. “It was too rough. I thought something round would be nicer for our neighbors, so I replaced it with a mug. Then we wanted to reduce the footprint, so I grabbed the stainless steel bowl, with its nice mirrored aspect. That was it."

Together with MVRDV, the architects of Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, we created the Depot x MVRDV Silver cup. Based on the technical scale drawing of the depot. The cup has a reflective silver glaze, made of porcelain.
